Biography of Celebrity Artist, Eugene Mosley

Eugene Mosley has been appointed the official Sammy Davis Jr artist


Eugene Mosley, a Jazz enthusiast, resides in Shreveport, LA., where he creates his masterful collages of history giving recognition to legends of Jazz and Entertainment. His artwork is stippling, depicted by millions of dots, meticulously arranged by hand to reveal the most memorable aspects of his legendary characters. His illustrations have been dubbed “a unique form of education through art” by school officials, who have encouraged him to use his art and Jazz artists to feel the void of information available to our youth about the legendary Jazz entertainers of all times.

He has been an artist for over twenty years. Eugene was born in Germany and raised in the United States. His family moved to Shreveport, Louisiana in the late 60’s. He received his education in public schools. After graduating from Southwood High School, Eugene enlisted into the United States Army. He served over 10 years of service and received an honorable discharge. Eugene received his college education from the University of Las Vegas and Southern University - Shreveport. His major was in Art Education and Marketing.

Art has not only been a hobby for Eugene, it has been a career. He has taught various art classes in the past and continues to do so. Initially his artwork was centered on the history of Jazz in the Shreveport area. He later broadened it to include not only well-known Jazz artists, but several contemporary Hollywood actors/actresses.

Those to receive Eugene’s artwork have included: Mayor - Shreveport, La. Keith Hightower, Comedy/Actor Steve Harvey, Dancer/Composer Mercedes Ellington (granddaughter of the late Duke Ellington), Dancer/Singer/Composer Cecelia Calloway (daughter of the late Cab Calloway), Composer/Musician Wynton Marsalis, Actor/Comedian Bill Cosby, Band Leader Lionel Hampton, World Championship Wrestlers Kevin Nash “Big Sexy”, Diamond Dallas Paige, Earnest Miller “The Cat”, Owner-Horseshoe Casino Jack Binion, Attorney Johnny Cochran, and Owner-Black Entertainment Television Mr. Robert Johnson, just to name a few.

Eugene has also created artwork of Actress/Comedian Lucille Ball, Actor John Wayne, Singer/Actor Elvis Presley, Actor Clint Eastwood, Actor/Singer Will Smith, Actress Halle Berry, and various movie characters.

His artwork has been featured in JazzTimes Magazine, Jet Magazine, KTBS - Channel 12, and BET on Jazz. It was also inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame at the Lincoln Center in New York City. Eugene was instrumental in obtaining several jazz artist to perform at various jazz related activities in the Shreveport area and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Eugene Mosley was permitted by the family of Grover Washington, Jr. to present his artwork as a tribute to Grover Washington, Jr. (Protect a Dream Foundation). During the past two years, Eugene has been selected as the official artist for the St. Louis Tap Festival, which he designs awards for. He was also approved to be the official artist for rendering artwork on comedian Richard Pryor to raise funds for renaming a street after Richard Pryor in his hometown of Peoria, Illinois.

Eugene has the rights from his godfather, Mr. Fayard Nicholas of the Nicholas Brothers, to produce and design mugs, artwork, and commemorative coins of the World Famous Tap Dancers - The Nicholas Brothers. Furthermore, Eugene is the official artist for Altovise Davis and the Sammy Davis, Jr. Estate. He has designed a collage of portraits of the late Sammy Davis, Jr. The portrait can be viewed on the Larry King Live Show on CNN, May 29, 2002. Most recently, Eugene was asked to design an art piece with reflections of President Bush’s arrival in Bossier City, LA on September 11, 2002, due to horrific events that occurred on this date. This art piece was presented to Lt. General Keck, Commander of the 8th Airforce, Barksdale Airforce Base.

Eugene is a member of Shreveport Regional Arts Council and a former board member of Shreveport Downtown Development Authority. He received the A.M.P.S. 2002 Artist of the Year Award, the 2003 African American History Award for his work as an Celebrity Artist, and has been selected by Ms. Barbara Sinatra to provide art work to raise funds for the Frank Sinatra Celebrity Invitational.
