It has been years since New York has seen anything quite like the old Copacabana. The Copa, Manhattan’s best-known nightclub, was also the most popular nightspot in America. Through vintage photographs, The Copacabana chronicles how this landmark institution became an American cultural icon.
Kristin Baggelaar is the author of Folk Music: More Than a Song and The Folk Music Encyclopedia. A portion of all sales from The Copacabana will be donated by Baggelaar to the Society of Singers, a charitable organization that helps professional singers in need and works within the entertainment community by directly supporting the future of aspiring singers with vocal arts scholarships.
Highlights of The Copacabana:
• Includes behind-the-scene experiences of the Copacabana from an entertainer’s point of view; what it was like to be a Copa Girl, a production singer, a star
• Features a storehouse of memories, stories and tidbits evoking nostalgic memories of an incredible entertainment era
• Explains the heyday of nightlife in New York during the 1940s and 50s
• Shows how the Copacabana burst on the scene and had an aura of glamour and sophistication for over five decades
