SPECIAL “SAMMY DAVIS JR AWARD” AT THE BOLLYWOOD FASHION AWARDS
A The family of legend Sammy Davis Jr. has chosen the Bollywood Fashion Awards to be the platform for the special “Sammy Davis Jr. Award.” Sammy Davis Jr.is often described as "the world's greatest entertainer” also epitomized the symbiotic relationship between entertainment and fashion which, fittingly, is the mantra of the Bollywood Fashion Awards.
Throughout his career, Sammy Davis Jr. was the quintessential multi-talented performer. His popularity soared whether he was singing, dancing or impersonating. His career credits include forty albums and innumerable television and film appearances. He exemplified style and elegance with his trademark moves and looks.
As a member of the world-famous Rat Pack, a group of Sinatra associates, Sammy’s style was trend-setting. He was a lead in the first Rat Pack film, Oceans Eleven, which continues to be remade today as one of the most stylish and iconic films. One of his most popular chart-busters was “The Candy Man” from the film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Style and entertainment went hand-in-hand for Davis Jr.
“The Bollywood Awards have always sought to bring Indian movies, fashion and entertainment into the mainstream, transcending national borders. Similarly, Sammy Davis Jr. was a pioneer in entertainment; he was popular on both sides of the racial divide,” said Chairman of the Bollywood Awards, Kamal Dandona, a self-confessed Sammy David Jr. fan. His excitement is evident, especially because, the Bollywood Awards has achieved another “first.” It was the first South Asian Awards ceremony to have an international celebrity participate in the festivities. Michael Jackson attended the inaugural ceremony of the Bollywood Awards in 1999 and now, the Bollywood Awards, is the first to have an Honorary Award instituted by the family of an American legend, an honor indeed. Altovise Davis, wife of late Sammy Davis Jr will present this prestigious award.
The Sammy Davis Jr. Award honoree is being kept a secret by show organizers at this time. It will be a surprise and announced at the Awards on July 29th. Major celebrities like Tyra Banks, Jerry Hall, Steven Seagal, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Nikki Hilton, and many others have donned Indian outfits and finery at past Fashion Awards. This year will be no exception. The Bollywood Fashion Awards 2006 will be the 6th annual gala event of international stature honoring the outstanding achievements of Indian fashion designers during the prior year. Unlike any fashion awards of its kind, the event will bring together the top international designers, most ravishing models, and the hottest celebrities together to honor the colliding worlds of fashion and entertainment.
